SONY 9oS
Introducing the Sony ‘9oS’, a magnetic headphone–speaker hybrid developed as a collaborative project between Central Saint Martins and Sony. This project explores the intersection of nostalgic audio culture and contemporary product design, reinterpreting the social dynamics of late 20th-century boombox use within a modern technological framework.
The ‘9oS’ draws formal and conceptual inspiration from 1980s and 1990s consumer electronics, as well as the functionalist principles of Dieter Rams. Emphasising clarity, restraint, and usability, the design integrates a dual-function system in which the speaker unit magnetically separates into wearable headphones. This transformation supports both individual and collective listening modes, reflecting a shift from private consumption to shared auditory experiences.
Materiality and interface design are central to the product’s identity. The device features a refined geometric form and tactile controls, aligning with contemporary user expectations while appealing to Generation Z’s affinity for retro aesthetics. The incorporation of spatial audio technology, such as Adobe Atmos, enables a 360-degree listening experience, further enhancing immersion in both personal and group contexts.
In addition, the ‘9oS’ includes a modular connectivity feature that allows multiple units to synchronise, forming an expanded sound system. This capability extends the social dimension of the product, encouraging collaborative engagement and reinforcing the communal ethos historically associated with portable music devices.
Overall, the Sony ‘9oS’ represents a critical re-evaluation of legacy audio culture through a contemporary lens. By combining nostalgic references with advanced functionality, the project proposes a renewed model of music interaction, one that prioritises flexibility, social connectivity, and experiential richness within a cohesive and minimal design language.
